After midnight, that’s when they let it all hang out—the third shifts at automaker plants, that is—GM, Ford, Chrysler, Kia, Nissan, Hyundai, and Volkswagen. The automotive industry has grown so robust, and sales have climbed so rapidly, they’ve called in the midnight shifts to try to keep up with demand all of the vehicles orders.

Here is where the automakers are manufacturing third shifts:

Ford, Wayne, Mich.: Focus
Ford Dearorn, Mich.: F series
GM, Lordstrown, Ohio: Cruze
GM, Flin, Mich.: pickups
GM, Delta Township, Mich.: Traverse/Enclave/Acadia
FM, Kansa City, Kan.: Malibu/LaCrosse
GM, Fort Wyne, Ind.: pickups
GM, Oshawa, Ont.: Equinox/Terrain
GM, Ingersoll, Ont.: Equinox/Terrain
Kia, West Point, Ga.: Optima/Sorento/Santa Fe

As encouraging as the manufacturing activity is that at least four of the vehicles (Volt, Dart, Focus, and Cruze) were designed to meet high fuel efficiency demands, and several others have been retooled to improve gas mileage–or in the case of the Volt, have the capability of running without gas at all.
