Virtual Events 101: How to Get the Most Out of the Online Experience

Now that several of FMA’s events are going virtual, such as World-Class Roll Forming Workshop, ALAW, and the Safety Conference, we want you to get the most out of them. There are many benefits to virtual events. For one, there are no travel expenses and no waiting in long lines at the airport. You don’t have to wear business attire, or those shoes that have your feet barking almost as soon as you put them on. Instead you’ll be in your favorite PJs drinking your favorite coffee with the best seat in the house, literally.

If you’re new to attending virtual events, here are some pointers we’ve put together to ensure you have a great experience:

• Access the virtual platform at least one day before the event. The more familiar you are with the virtual platform, the more you can focus on the valuable sessions. If you’re signed up for a virtual FMA fall conference, instructions including how to access the sessions will be emailed at least one week before the event.

• Make sure you know your FMA login since that’s what you’ll use to access virtual conferences. Reach out to us if you’re not sure what your login information is.

• Make sure you set aside time specifically for the virtual event you’re attending. You can avoid distractions by blocking your calendar, turning off notifications, and going to a quiet place in your home or office building.

• Note-taking is a great way to retain valuable information. Don’t worry if you miss some details though. You’ll be able to access the slides and session recordings at a later date.

• Just because you’re not face-to-face doesn’t mean you can’t (virtually) connect with industry leaders and peers. You can do this by connecting with sponsors and other attendees in the Conference Forum. Be sure to introduce yourself. During the presentations, you can live chat with other attendees as well as reach out to FMA staff for assistance. Or post a question to a speaker in the Q&A box and they will answer after their presentation.

• Be even more prepared for the virtual event by reviewing the session descriptions and presenter’s background information. This way you’ll have questions ready to go when live Q&As begin.

• Being able to hear hosts and speakers clearly is crucial during live virtual events. To make sure you’re all ears, check that your audio is working properly and use headphones or earbuds to eliminate outside noises, so you don’t miss a word.

• You’ll probably be tempted to get a snack from the kitchen from time to time — so have one, or several, snacks nearby while you’re tuning into sessions. A glass of water is great to keep close too. Undivided attention can make you thirsty!

• See the latest technological advancements without leaving the house or office by “visiting” Sponsor Showcases during FMA’s virtual conferences to view next-generation technology from dozens of online exhibitors.

Virtual events are proving to be just as valuable as in-person events, and much more cost-effective and convenient. Hopefully these tips and tricks will help you get the most out of any upcoming online events you’re attending. Keep the conversation going post event by using the event hashtag on your favorite social platform #WCRF2020 #ALAWlaser or #FMAsafety.
